When the Tiananmen Square Massacre took place in June 1989, I had just finished high school. At that time, my family and I kept gazing at the TV news one piece after another, and to this very day, those bloody pictures still remain vivid in my mind.
Should a regime that indifferently massacres its own people be respected? For more than 25 years, the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements in China (the Alliance) has been feeding upon the topic of Tiananmen Square Massacre. Every year on June Fourth, the Alliance holds a candlelight vigilance. And they have even built a June 4th Museum. Do you still think that the Alliance does this for the sake of Hongkongers?
I have taken part in many years’ June Fourth candlelight vigilances in the Victoria Park. Every year, the organizer would lead the participants to shout, amidst tens of thousands of lighted candles, slogans like “Redress June Fourth Incident”, “End One-Party Rule”, “Build a Democratic China”, so loudly that the sounds practically reach every corner of the park. However, in the candlelight assembly of 2011, many people saw through the trick of the Alliance and decided not to be a chip of the Alliance any more.
On 24th May 2010, Albert Ho Chun-yan, President of Democratic Party, Emily Lau, Vice-President, and Cheung Man-kong, legislator, joined a closed-door conference with The Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (The Liaison Office), as a result of which most of the citizens who had all along trusted them suspected that they had betrayed the future of Hong Kong and the people of Hong Kong. In the mass rally on July 1st of the same year, the then gravely ill Szeto Wah, founder of the Alliance, notoriously called citizens who queried the Democratic Party’s loyalty to Hong Kong “pigs and dogs”.
Szeto passed away in January 2011. In the June Fourth Candlelight vigilance organized by the Alliance in that year, the main theme of the assembly became “Redress June Fourth Incident, Revolution has not yet Succeeded; Construct Democracy, Comrades still Got to Work Hard”. And many people wondered why the poster, “End One-Party Rule”, which had been used for decades, was absent, and suspected that following the Democratic Party’s secret meeting with The Liaison Office, the Alliance also knelt down before Communist China. The assembly that night was also an activity of paying homage to Szeto Wah, making many participants uneasy. The weeping tone of Richard Tsoi Yiu-cheong, Vice-President of the Alliance, on that night, became a hot topic, too. Almost everybody was dissatisfied with the moral degeneration of the activity as a whole and the affected manners of the organizer.
On 2nd June 1989, Lee Cheuk-yan, former chairman of the Alliance, travelled to Beijing with two million Hong Kong dollars, reportedly donations made by Hong Kong citizens. Then he was allegedly detained there for a few days, and it was only after he had signed a confession that he was released, while the money was seized by the communist authorities. For more than twenty years, no one has been able to confirm the whereabouts of the sum. Nonetheless, for more than twenty years, the Alliance has gathered people by way of the Massacre, and used citizens’ conscience and empathy to enhance their own influence and to raise funds, while what it does is not for Hong Kong at all.
For seventeen years, Hongkongers have been matching with a view to struggling for Hong Kong democracy and for civic rights to which everybody should be entitled. However, our pace has been slowed down by pan-democrats. We had aspired after 2007/2008 double universal suffrage, and then 2012 double universal suffrage. But 2012 double universal suffrage was given up after the Democratic Party’s secret talk with The Liaison Office, and the former accepted the constitutional reform proposal of the Hong Kong Government, with the invention of the freak, "Super District Councillors"! And now we have the constitutional reform proposal of the 2017 Chief Executive Election. Every time the struggle is reduced to slogan shouting. What is even more outrageous is that the behaviour of the pan-democrats is seen to deviate from the path of democracy further and further.
The Alliance is after all a pan-democracy organization and its founder, Szeto Wah, loved Communist China dearly. The June Fourth candlelight vigilance has long been deemed by many Hong Kong citizens to be an activity for raising funds and stealing the show. One simply cannot see how the slogan, “Redress June Fourth Incident”, which has been shouted for more than twenty years, can contribute to Hong Kong democracy.
The Alliance, if you want to build a democratic China, please go back to your China and take your time to build it. Hong Kong practices “one country, two systems”; whether China has democracy or not has nothing to do with the political system of Hong Kong. Under the high-handed Hong Kong communist regime, Hong Kong people suffer intensely. And China people keep coming to disturb Hong Kong people’s life and to snatch away Hong Kong people’s rights and benefits. While we are so busily dealing with our local problems, what on earth does what occurred in China back on June 4th, 1989 have to do with us?!
Stop using Hongkongers’ kindness to betray Hong Kong, please!
